SC-HASS 2025
Antarctica in Times of Change

Oct 7-9, 2025 Hosted by Faculty of Law, University of Chile

Message from the Convenor

I want to welcome all Antarctic humanities and social science scholars and stakeholders to the 2025 biennial academic conference of the Standing Committee on Humanities and Social Sciences (SC-HASS) of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR). The Antarctic Studies Program of the Universidad de Chile’s Law Faculty is very proud to host this conference for the first time.

The conference will take place on October 7th, 8th, and 9th, 2025, in an online format. The first two days will feature three live stream channels, divided into two time blocks (morning and evening, according to Chilean time). We have considered plenary conferences, panels, individual presentations, and pre-recorded video presentations. The last day we will have time for SC-HASS and the action groups' business meeting.

We have prepared online forms for you to submit your proposals and applications.

I look forward to seeing all of you through the online platform.

Theme and Events

Antarctica in Times of Change

The conference theme is “Antarctica in Times of Change” as a symbol of purity, isolation, and ecological balance, is facing unprecedented transformations. Climate change, accelerated ice melt, biodiversity loss, and growing geopolitical and economic interest pose urgent challenges that require a global, informed, and collaborative response. Throughout the conference, we will explore everything from the dynamics of Antarctic and sub-Antarctic ecosystems from multiple disciplines within the framework of the social sciences and humanities.
